Another stop on the 2012 Sculpture Trail ride: Henry Moore’s King & Queen, sitting regally over Glenkiln Reservoir with enough majestic charm to make you wonder if it’s secretly running the local sheep population.
It’s just one of several sculptures scattered around the estate, which looks less like a reservoir and more like a VIP lounge for the art world’s finest. Between 1951 and 1976, Sir William Keswick, owner of Glenkiln Estate and quite possibly the original art influencer, set about turning the landscape into the world’s first open-air sculpture collection. Picture a Bond villain, minus the world domination, just quietly curating masterpieces for sheep and hikers.
Whatever the reasoning, Glenkiln is now a proper mix of scenery and art, and well worth swinging the bike round for if you’re doing the trail.
