The B4518 running from Llanbrynmair down to Rhayader is one of those Mid Wales roads that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough. It cuts through open moorland and forestry, past the Clywedog reservoir, with barely a village to slow you down along the way.
Wide, sweeping sections give way to tighter, more technical stretches, and the scenery does a fair bit of the work too: big skies, empty hills, and that proper away-from-it-all feeling.
Why it’s worth a ride
Roads like this are exactly what makes Mid Wales such good riding country. Quiet, well surfaced, and varied enough to keep you on your toes without ever feeling like a slog. Pair it with some of the other routes through the area and you’ve got a cracking day out.
