Just off the A41 outside Whitchurch sits the Midway Truck Stop, a place where the coffee’s strong, the portions are stronger, and the car park looks less like a car park and more like a scale model of the M6 at rush hour, what with all the lorries parked up.
This is proper trucker territory. They’ve even got their own seating section, which tells you everything you need to know about who’s boss here. Turn up on two wheels and you’ll feel a bit like you’ve wandered into someone else’s local, but don’t worry, bikers are made just as welcome as the HGV crowd.
The main event, though, is the “Desperate Dan” breakfast. Named, presumably, after the only man in fiction who could realistically finish one. This isn’t a fry-up so much as a full agricultural inventory laid out on a plate, and it comes with a challenge built in: think you’ve got a big appetite? Go on then, prove it.
Spoiler alert, most don’t manage it. There’s usually at least one member of the group who orders it with supreme confidence, gets about two-thirds of the way through, and then quietly starts negotiating with the rest of the table about who’s finishing their chips. It’s practically a tradition at this point.
If you’re passing on the A41 and fancy a breakfast that could double as a packed lunch, the Midway’s your stop. Just don’t say nobody warned you about the Desperate Dan.
