The Salt Box cafe, nestled in the heart of Hatton at the crossroads of the A511 Station Road and the A516 Derby Road, is a true gem for anyone who appreciates a hearty meal served with a side of charm. This cafe has been around longer than most of us have been riding bikes, and it’s earned its reputation as a go-to spot for lorry drivers, bikers, and anyone else who knows the value of a plate piled high with goodness.
The menu here is an absolute marvel, offering a dizzying array of choices that cater to every appetite—whether you’re in the mood for a light bite (what even is that?) or a meal that could feed a small army. Portions are as generous as the warm welcome you’ll get when you walk through the door. And let’s talk breakfasts—oh, the breakfasts! My personal favorite, the Tattie Breakfast, is nothing short of legendary. Imagine a feast of perfectly cooked chips, eggs, and other glorious components that come together in a symphony of taste so good it could make a grown biker weep. It’s the kind of breakfast that sticks to your ribs and powers you through an entire day of adventuring—or at least to the next cafe stop.
But alas, there’s a catch. The Salt Box’s breakfast menu, as heavenly as it is, has a curfew: 11:30 AM. Once the clock strikes breakfast’s bedtime, they switch to the lunch menu, leaving late risers like me to stare wistfully at the clock and wish for a time machine. Lunch is still excellent, mind you, but there’s something about knowing you’ve missed out on a Tattie Breakfast that hits harder than a pothole on a corner.
So, if you’re planning a visit (and you absolutely should), get there early, grab a seat, and prepare to feast like royalty. Just don’t dawdle, or you’ll find yourself staring longingly at a menu of breakfasts that are no longer available, clutching your coffee like it’s the only thing keeping you going.
