Starting in Moffat, follow the signs for Edinburgh on the A701. The road soon opens up to some fantastic scenery, including the infamous Devil’s Beef Tub, a large hollow formed by four hills.
From here the road climbs steadily through the Southern Uplands, with the landscape opening out into big, empty, rolling hills on either side. It’s a proper change of scene from the town, and one that arrives quickly.
Why it’s worth a ride
The Devil’s Beef Tub alone is worth the trip, but the road leading up to it and beyond is just as good, flowing bends through genuinely dramatic scenery. A great way to start a ride north out of Moffat.
